Emmaus Dover is a social enterprise that provides a home and employment for formerly homeless people. Gilly Pickup finds out more.
With its architecture dating back to the days of Henry VIII, Archcliffe Fort is the historic setting for Emmaus Dover.
For 27 years the charity has provided homeless and socially disadvantaged people with a supportive environment in which to live and work.
In 1994, the charity was granted a lease of 99 years and, after substantial refurbishment, the first residents or "companions" as they are known - moved in.
Currently, Archcliffe Fort is home to 25 men and women.
There is no time limit on how long they can stay, enabling people to rebuild their lives in their own time.
Companions do 40 hours of work every week in the community as part of their licence agreement.
"Our work generates revenue that pays for their homes, food and upkeep, as well as providing them with a small weekly allowance," Kirsty Mitchell, Regional Communications Officer, explains.
