Spireites manager gets full backing

NEW Chesterfield chairman Mike Goodwin has promised manager John Pemberton total control after completing his purchase of the club.

Former Leeds United defender Pemberton, 55, took over from John Sheridan in January and oversaw five wins from nine games to lead the Spireites out of the relegation zone.

“John did a very good job last season,” said Goodwin. “Over the timeframe, it would have put us in the top half.

“I’d not met him before, but we sat down for a couple of hours last week. I liked him, I liked his openness and honesty. I liked his vision for how the club should play.

“And I think he was pleasantly surprised with what we had to say to him. I’ve told him he’ll get my support but that playing matters are down to him. We won’t interfere with that. He’s the expert, not me – and I think he’ll do a very good job.”
