LOS EXPERTOS creen que la mayoría no recibimos suficiente vitamina D, una hormona fabricada por la piel con la ayuda de la luz solar. Las personas con niveles bajos de vitamina D en sangre tienen tasas significativamente más altas de casi todas las enfermedades en las que puedas pensar: cáncer, diabetes, obesidad, osteoporosis, infartos, accidentes cerebrovasculares, depresión, deterioro cognitivo, enfermedades autoinmunes, etc.
Es difícil obtener vitamina D en cantidades suficientes a través de la dieta. Cuando nuestros antepasados vivían al aire libre en regiones tropicales, no era un problema. Sus cuerpos, probablemente no totalmente cubiertos por ropa, producían toda la vitamina D que necesitaban gracias a la exposición al sol.

Sin embargo, en uno de los mayores ensayos jamás realizado, publicado en el New England Journal of Medicine en 2019, en el que 25.871 participantes recibieron altas dosis de suplementos de vitamina D durante cinco años, no encontraron ningún impacto en cáncer, enfermedades cardiacas o accidentes cerebrovasculares.
