Researchers conducting a study on the extent to which Nile tilapia have invaded South African rivers need farmers’ help.
In the second half of 2017, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research launched a citizen science survey on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in South Africa as part of its Strategic Environment Assessment programme. People were encouraged to send in photographic and location data of any tilapia they caught. The aim of the survey is to determine to what extent the Nile tilapia has penetrated the South African river systems.
Unfortunately, the response to the survey has been poor, largely because it ran over winter when tilapia angling is limited.
