A storm is brewing about plans to commercially harvest fish from Vanderkloof Dam.
This proposed development has resulted in a significant level of concern amongst the freshwater recreational angling fraternity. We became aware of the proposed fishery after some anglers attended a public meeting aimed at introducing the project. Alarmed at what they heard was about to happen, they contacted the South African Consolidated Recreational Angling Association (SACRAA) and requested that this association intervenes on their behalf. The elephant in the room is the largemouth yellowfish – a nationally listed, threatened species and the prize angling species for many fly fishermen and artlure anglers, both locally and internationally. Vanderkloof Dam is considered by many as the premier destination for catching this species and the trophy-sized specimens that this venue regularly produces are a matter of record.
