One recreational fishing trend that justifies an upfront mentioning is our feature on “Fat Bike Fishing”, which is growing in popularity among beach anglers up and down our eastern coastline. To lead off a mini-series on this beach fishing innovation news editor Charmagne Grimbeek and photographer Tobias Weber experienced first-hand the joys – and physical demands – of a day on the beach at St Lucia with saltwater guide Jeff Asher-Wood. Their account begins on page 34.

It’s always intriguing – and also highly interesting – to read what first-timers experience when they actually get the opportunity to go fish a venue that’s been on their ‘bucket list’ for a long time. This year Werner Lubbe, who has lessened his commitments to formal angling at provincial and international level, at long last found the time and opportunity to fish one of the most sought after and prestigious saltwater venues in southern Africa, namely Mazeppa Bay. His story however drills deeper into the pure personal enjoyment of the adventure than most accounts in the genre – he had to employ lessons learnt over many seasons of high-level competitive angling to overcome unexpected and highly disruptive weather conditions.

In this issue of Tight Lines, you can read more about Neville Barnard’s attempt to conquer a challenging dam on the Lesotho border and find out from Eben Dowd how to tie the mustard Caddis fly. Rohan Koegelenberg takes us on another Orange River adventure and Andries Maree shows us how to make sweet white dough for bait.

Competitions 
November 2017 saw South Africa hosting the 34th men’s and 25th ladies’ World Club Championships for shore anglers at Langebaan on the West Coast. Although the anglers had to battle seaweed and unfavourable weather conditions, they managed to land a few good catches. The Overberg Boat Club, together with the Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association (WPDSAA), hosted the 6th Annual Kleinbaai Bottomfish Interprovincial from 26 to 30 September 2017 with three teams from the Eastern Province, three from the Western Province and one from KwaZulu-Natal taking part.

LOOKING BACK AT A SUCCESSFUL YEAR
As the year draws to an end, it is always satisfying to look back and revel in one’s achievements, including one’s personal bests. Someone who certainly has several of these to boast of is Molli van der Merwe, who achieved no more than five personal bests during the year: each one an improvement on the last. At the same time, she made good on her resolution to go fishing as often as she could.
In addition to Molli’s exploits, freshwater anglers can read about the adventures of Evert Laubscher and Rudolph Venter, who went fishing in the Okavango Delta, and Rohan Koegelenberg who went drifting the Orange River in the vicinity of Riemvasmaak for the adventure of a lifetime. Saltwater anglers, on the other hand, can join Manie Combrinck as he tells us about Wayne Biljoen’s successful day on his kayak in Cape Vidal.
This month, you can also read about some of the wonderful experiences of your fellow readers and fishing enthusiasts as they brag about their catches. The participants in the 30th Gamtoos Boat Angling Tournament made the most of this annual four-day competition near Port Elizabeth, and we congratulate Coen Zeelie on his catch during the South African championships, in which he participated in the category for sight-impaired anglers. 
We introduce a new series this month, which focuses on targeting specific species. This month, Chris Nolan gives anglers some tips on targeting bronze bream, which can be found from the southwestern Cape northwards up to KwaZulu-Natal, and has even been encountered in Mozambique.

One of the big questions that many anglers find themselves grappling with, and which they are sure will reveal the big secret to catching bigger fish than anyone else, is what the best time of year is to pack up your gear and head for the waters. Perhaps you should follow the example of Rohan Koegelenberg and keep a diary, so that you can compare the conditions during your current fishing trip to the same time last year, or the year before.
Looking back at the conditions on the Vaal River over the years, Rohan, however, reached the conclusion that whatever the weather, the secret lies in making the most of your angling adventure, and making sure that you have the right tackle to do so. 
This month, we take you across the length and breadth of our beautiful country. Paging through this issue of Tight Lines, you can follow Rohan and catch yellowfish on the Vaal River or join Eben Dowd to catch trout near Belfast in Mpumalanga. Andries Maree gives you professional tips on catching bass in Limpopo’s Rust de Winter Dam. Chris Nolan talks to guest angler Riaan la Grange about catching white musselcracker or brusher, as it is also known, in Still Bay in the Southern Cape. Danie Engelbrecht takes us to the Jozini Dam in KwaZulu-Natal to catch tigerfish. 
You can also read about the excitement that formed part of two angling competitions: the Buffelspoort Business Challenge, a trophy carp angling competition that was held in August, and the 3 Species Bonanza, which was held at Loskop Dam in September, where the race was on to catch the heaviest carp, barbel and bass.

The annual SA Shore Angling Championships delivered some exciting moments with more than 1 000 edible fish being caught.  A highlight on the freshwater angling calendar is the Bloemhof Dam Bonanza. Despite the event almost being cancelled at the last minute due to rising water levels that saw the dam go from being less than 20% full in March to overflowing its banks a month later, the many barbel that were caught earned them the undisputed title of species of the day in both the bank and boat competitions.

June provides the perfect opportunity for fathers and their sons (or daughters) to bond beside the fishing waters. In this issue, Rohan van Koegelenberg takes a look at the lasting relationships that are built when dads and their lads spend time together on a fishing trip. Other highlights include the special father-and-son blue kurper adventure of Kobus and Brandon Hermitage, as well as Emile van Druten’s interview with his children Rome and Emile about what makes fishing so special.

Manie Combrinck tells us about his kayak fishing adventure at Mapelane on the banks of the Umfolozi River in St Lucia, where he was joined by fellow kayak fishing enthusiasts. Roux Swart also introduces readers to kite fishing as a form of angling. This is an affordable alternative to inshore boat fishing or dropping bait with a bait boat or drone. Both these articles give shore anglers a new take on traditional methods of angling.

Competitions
This year, the South African Shore Angling Association (SASAA) hosted the SA Ladies’ Shore Angling Championship at Struisbaai. SASAA takes care to rotate the angling area to reduce the impact of catches on marine resources in these areas. The angling conditions were challenging on the first and last days of the competition, but the 49 ladies managed to show what they are made of. A kob of 9.02 kg, a ragged-tooth shark of 96 kg and a duckbill ray were among the most memorable catches. The ladies also caught quite a few diamond rays. During the prize-giving, the Protea Ladies’ Shore Angling Team was announced and individual achievements were recognised. The six best anglers were also announced.

Whether you like luring those big barbels from the bank or chasing yellowfish on an inflatable boat with a fly on hand, this month’s issue has something for you. Learn how to land those big, bearded beauties with the barbel-popping technique and discover a very special fly fishing venue on the Orange River just above the Augrabies Falls. Experienced fisherman Danie Engelbrecht explains why fish are often lost once they are caught.

The South African Shore Angling Association hosted the 2017 Masters Shore Angling Championship in Jeffreys Bay. The anglers had to battle challenging angling conditions, but a few anglers managed to land successful catches. The 20th Top 10 Game Fish Invitational was held at Cape Vidal. This competition has come to be known as the event where some of the stalwarts of deep-sea fishing come to test their skills. Find out how they fared in this issue.

Winter is in the process of wrapping her icy blanket around us, but that is no deterrent to our anglers! Bernard Venter targeted smallmouth yellowfish in the Lower Orange River and gives advice on the tackle and angling methods that work best to outwit this species. Fly-fishing expert Rohan Koegelenberg did battle with the smallmouth yellows at Boegoeberg Dam on the Orange River in the heart of the Kalahari and is waxing lyrical about this fantastic fishing destination. 

Neville Barnard took his friend Ryan Mathysen to Kwaggashoek Dam to help him improve his PB and they had some great fun landing some big carp! In this issue Eben Dowd shows us how to tie the Stonefly Larva.

Every sea angler dreams of casting a line in the water at Stilbaai at some stage. Kobus Hermitage was fortunate enough to spend the December 2016 holidays there and caught some fine kob and other fish from the beach and on the deep sea. He is planning to visit this quaint coastal town again soon!

On the competition front we report on the Masters Championships of the South African Shore Angling Association (SASAA) held in the Eastern Cape. We are also very proud of the South African Artificial Lure Angling Association (SAALAA) Protea team that took gold at the recent 2016 Malawi/South African championships on Lake Malawi. Well done fellows!

South African trophy carp legend Martin Louw and his son Dunkan experienced the angling session of a lifetime in November/December 2016. They landed the largest number of big carp in one session in the country’s history. Ricky van Onselen shares this special story with our readers.  

Fly angler Rohan Koegelenberg is targeting the yellows in the Vaal River and this month he looks at the life cycle of yet another mayfly species. Fly-fishing enthusiasts should also not miss Eben Dowd’s article with its step-by-step explanation of how to tie the Vliegmier. The South African Fly-fishing and Fly-tying Expo, the biggest of its kind in South Africa, will take place in Gauteng on 24 and 25 June this year. Make sure to note this down on your calendars.
