ALPINE A110 R ULTIME

LET'S ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM straight off the bat: the A110 R Ultime costs more than 2023's evo Car and Track Car of the Year, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. For a flyweight with a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine this will be, to some people, a price tag the diminutive French wonder simply can't pull off. Good job that eCoty measures a car purely on its ability then. Over the course of the next few days we'll be able to deliver the definitive verdict on the most extreme and focused road car that Alpine has ever produced.

ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH

ASTON MARTIN'S RECENT SALES PERFORMANCE hasn't matched the quality of its current line-up, which in 2025 saw the arrival of the new Vanquish, the V12 front-engined flagship to sit at the top of the pile ahead of the V8-engined Vantage and DB12.

JUST AS 2024'S TEST INCLUDED THE MAZDA MX-5 and McLaren Artura, both evolutions of existing models – and previous eCoty contenders – so Audi's formidable RS3 hyperhatch arrived in Digne-les-Bains with a handful of updates under its box-arched bodywork.

BMW M2 CS

ARRIVING AT ECOTY WHEN YOUR PREDECESSOR IS A former winner takes the pressure every contender already faces and turns it up to 11. What's more, the M2 CS arrives at 2025's gathering with the added weight of reasserting M division honour after the M3 and M4 CS both fell short of delivering in 2023 and 2024 respectively (we'll draw a veil over the M4 CSL's performance in 2022).

CHEVROLET CORVETTE E-RAY

THERE ARE TWO HYBRID MODELS IN 2025's CAR OF the Year and both from unlikely sources, though I'd wager the American muscle car is the more unlikely of the two. The C8 'Vette is far from new, but its official arrival in Europe is, and while the Z06 offers the greater firepower, it's the more affordable E-Ray that's expected to be the biggest seller. All things being relative of course, because it still costs north of £150,000.

FERRARI 12 CILINDRI

IT’S BEEN A WHILE, OVER A DECADE IN FACT, SINCE a Ferrari was crowned evo Car of the Year, and it was quite the crowning achievement with the 458 Speciale walking away with a unanimous victory in 2014, every judge placing it first. Can the 12 Cilindri break the long absence from the podium’s top step?

LIKE THE BMW M2 CS, THE MASERATI ARRIVES at eCoty '25 with the pressure of a recent victory, although in the Maser's case this is a faster, harder, more focused iteration of 2022's MC20 rather than a direct replacement. The GT2 Stradale is Maserati taking a play from the Porsche book of model evolution.

MERCEDES-AMG GT63 PRO

A DECADE AGO, THE ORIGINAL AMG GT ARRIVED at eCoty with high hopes and left with more questions around what it was trying to be rather than plaudits for what it was. This second-generation car, however, is such a step up from the original in almost every area that our greatest quandary wasn't whether we should invite it, but which version to bring along, for the GT has landed in multiple launch flavours.

MORGAN SUPERSPORT

MORGAN HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS SOMETHING of an eCoty regular, the Plus Six in 2019 and the Plus Four last year proving that not only do driving thrills come in many forms, but the simplest format is still relevant in today's high-tech automotive world. Now the new Supersport is the first step into a more modern world for the company, with substantial chassis upgrades that required a new crash test. Lighter, stiffer and with redesigned suspension and steering, the Supersport promises to be a sizeable step on from the Plus Four and Plus Six with the same core underpinnings.

PORSCHE 911 GT3

OH HOW WE LAUGHED WHEN SOME WAG, MOST likely John Barker, asked who was going to have the first drive in this year's winner – and this as we assembled in the car park on the very first morning of the test. The nervous glances exchanged between those present suggested that he was probably only half joking, such is the 911's – and specifically the GT3's – hit rate at eCoty. Surely this isn't another slam dunk?
