The ES90 is instantly recognisable as a member of the Volvo family with its ‘Thor's Hammer’ headlight motif, sharp shoulder line and C-shaped tail lights (joined by lights that flank the rear screen), you'll also notice that it rides a little taller than Volvo saloons of the past and has a sleeker fastback profile, with hints of the classic P1800 coupe.

It's taller than many luxury saloons at 1550mm and its five-metre length allows for a generous 3102mm wheelbase - all to the benefit of both passenger space, and ride quality and dynamics that take the sting out of crumbling roads. There's a 424-litre luggage area too, now accessible through a hatchback rather than a traditional saloon boot, so the expected Volvo quality of practicality remains intact.
