El cambio climático es la mayor amenaza a la que nos enfrentamos como especie, y en el Mediterráneo las temperaturas están subiendo un 20% más rápido que la media mundial. Este sobrecalentamiento ya está teniendo consecuencias reales y graves en toda la cuenca, y aumentarán en las próximas décadas, ya que se prevé que la subida del nivel del mar supere el metro en 2100, lo que afectará a un tercio de la población de la región. Es necesario tomar medidas urgentes y de gran alcance, tanto para mitigar las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero como para adaptarse a la nueva realidad del calentamiento del mar.

Un informe de WWF, publicado con motivo del Día Mundial de los Océanos, alerta del peligro de la acidificación de las aguas, la desaparición de ecosistemas y de especies y la acción destructora de especies invasoras. La asociación reclama a la comunidad internacional la protección de la biodiversidad a través de las acciones climáticas y los mecanismos financieros acordados en la Convención de la Diversidad Biológica, la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático (COP26) y la Convención de Barcelona, que tendrán lugar durante la segunda mitad de 2021.
