Musicworks 146 is all about breaking grooves and reexamining history. Multi-instrumentalist Julie Richard’s passion project is exploring the legacy of little known Black women composers by breathing life into their forgotten works through collective creation; the article also outlines the story of African American composer Shirley Graham’s 1932 opera Tom-Tom, Richard’s most recent focus. Abstract turntablist Maria Chavez discusses the roots of her practice, the pervasiveness of capitalism in music culture, and the magical qualities of shattered vinyl. Trevor Grahl explains the influence of his love of nostalgia on his music and the reality of the composer’s life. We check in with guitarist and music-community instigator Mustafa Rafiq and architect and electroacoustic ambient musician Evan Dysart.
