FROM THE EDITOR: My mother, while she was alive, was a fan of this magazine. And that wasn’t just familial fealty, unconditional literary love, unquestioning maternal loyalty … at least, I don’t think it was.
If we had gathered a group of the most loyal supporters of Forty South Tasmania, my mother would have felt herself amongst her peers, because throughout its long life, this magazine has appealed most strongly to those who have lived long lives.
Another way of saying this is that younger generations have found alternatives to print magazines, and the assorted editors of this magazine have spent more than three decades trying to lure them back, to broaden the demographic appeal of these printed pages – to engage with younger Tasmanians.
In the past three months, I have been in delightful and delighted communication with new contributors Lily Cooper and Benjamin Heine, and almost-new contributors Kate Bown and Katy Rogers, writers seeing Tasmania and things Tasmanian through Gen Z and Millennial eyes.
You are not being forgotten, dear Boomers and beyond. Our new writers may be young, but they are old-school Forty South contributors with the skill to craft Tasmanian narratives that appeal to everyone. However, the times they are a changin’ and, I hope, will continue to do so.
Forty South Tasmania Description:
Tasmania has been described as the world's best-kept secret, but it's not our fault - we have been telling the world about Tasmania for over 20 years. Forty South Tasmania has been described as a lifestyle magazine with brains. It offers three things: interesting features about Australia's island state, good writing and stunning photography. The magazine is a household name in Tasmania, but also has many subscribers elsewhere - people who have visited this beautiful place and now read the magazine for a regular reminder of an extraordinary experience. Forty South Tasmania offers feature stories, and stunning photography, about Tasmanian places and people, tourism, history and lifestyle, and regular columns on Tasmanian food, wine, arts and culture.
