Expect O-line to keep evolving

Ever since they won Super Bowl XLVI in February of 2012, the New York Giants have been trying to get their offensive line of the future settled.

They tried to build through the draft and supplement via free agency but they could not recapture the continuity and production they enjoyed during their Super Bowl years.

They used high draft picks on players such as Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg and Ereck Flowers and signed several free agents (Geoff Schwartz, John Jerry, J.D. Walton) but nothing seemed to click.

When Dave Gettleman came walking in at the end of the 2017 season, he told Giants Nation that he was dedicated to building the team from the inside out and opined on how he loved his “hog mollies,” a moniker he coined for large players along the offensive and defensive lines.

Two years into his tenure, the Giants defensive front is fortified with players such as B.J. Hill and Dexter Lawrence and they are more settled along the offensive line, but both units are still a distance away from where they need to be.

Left guard Will Hernandez, taken in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of UTEP, has started every game since arriving last year and has become a staple along the O-Line. So has right guard Kevin Zeitler, acquired in the mega-trade with Cleveland this past spring. They will be the Giants’ anchors on the line. They just might be the best pair of guards in the NFL at the moment.
