He used to defeat everyone in debates by unvieling their fallacies in reasoning. Finding himself to be the best amongst all, Pratardana became egoistic and demeaned everyone else. After establishing his supremacy in the field of logic, one day, he desired to discover the source of all logics. To know about the essence of all knowledge, he decided to visit Indra (considered as the King of the demigods). However, being clever at heart and also gripped by the clutches of ego, it was not easy for him to reach the abode of Indra.
Indra intentionally made the journey for Pratardana difficult in order to make him realise that ego always acts as a hurdle in the path of attaining Supreme Knowledge. Indeed, Pratardana had to confront various obstacles and challenges to make it to his destination. However, due to his persistence and also a true craving to discover the pinnacle of all knowledge, he could finally reach the abode of Indra.
He was drawn by the fascinating ambience of that divine land. Beautiful flowers blossomed and their sweet fragrance deluged the whole realm. Birds sang with joy and vibes of pleasant music flowed through the air. Amidst that magnificence, Pratardana found Indra, the king of Devas, sitting on his throne. Indra was aware of the hardships which Pratardana had to overcome in order to reach there. He was impressed by his determination and thus offered him a boon of his choice. However, Pratardana acted wisely at that moment and said, “O great one! You yourself choose a boon which you find the most appropriate for me.”
