The COVID-19 pandemic situation is Tamil Nadu continued to be grave on Tuesday, a day after the state saw the single highest number of new cases emerging. A record 527 from 19 districts, with Chennai accounting for 266 of them.
The total number of COVID-19 cases stands at 3,550 in the state.
The spike has seen government hospitals running out of beds. A proposal has been mooted to keep people with low symptoms at home or at quarantine facilities that the City Corporation has set up.
These are mainly at shuttered private colleges and the Chennai Trade Centre.
As many as 73 stable patients from Stanley Medical College Hospital were shifted to a COVID-care facility at a city college on Sunday.
Cuddalore district witnessed a sudden spike, recording 122 cases in a single day. Early Tuesday reports from the district said another 68 cases have been detected. Twenty more children - aged 0 to 12 - have tested positive, and among them are a newborn in Cuddalore, a three-day-old and a 10-day-old in Chennai.
