Discovering the Teign valley

Idyllic villages, a spectacular waterfall, riverside walks and a nature reserve –just some of the places to enjoy along the beautiful Teign Valley

Discovering the Teign valley

I usually end up in the Teign Valley by accident. Often it’s because I’ve had to take a diversion (got lost) somewhere between Torquay and Exeter.

When this happens and I’m passing signs for Doddiscombsleigh and Dunchideock, I think: a) good grief, where am I? And then, b) what a pretty, peaceful and interesting part of Devon this is.

Stretching from Kingsteignton to Dunsford and beyond, the Teign Valley has been left to get on with life because, well, it’s not really on the way to anywhere. But that just makes it worth a special trip.

The scenery throughout this narrow, wooded and steep-sided landscape is spectacular, especially when you gain some height.

Down below, there are several villages, each with their own thriving, rural communities and businesses, plus an active local history organisation, which explores the area’s social, farming and mining heritage.

“There is an amazing community spirit here,” says Graham Thompson, chair of the Teign Valley History Group. “We have lots of voluntary groups and, particularly during recent times, we look out for each other; someone will always help you out.” Graham has lived in Christow for 12 years and only has to look out of his window to remember why. “There’s just this fantastic view,” he says. “The scenery really is beautiful.”

Right, time to explore. Here’s how to make the most of a trip along the Teign Valley:

GET A BIRD’S EYE VIEW: Aim high and look down on the valley from one of several key points along the way.
