In need of a fantasy RPG? Elf yourself to this one

- Ian Evenden

SOLASTA II

The demo of Solasta II that's on Steam at the time of writing is a year old. As the game approaches its Early Access release in March, developer Tactical Adventures has revealed all the character classes and subclasses in the game, as well as exclusively demonstrating its combat system to PCG.

The Solasta games are fantasy RPGs not completely dissimilar to a certain 2023 Baldur's Gate title. They're developed by Tactical Adventures, a Paris-based indy founded in 2018 by Mathieu Girard, formerly of Amplitude Studios. He was production director on 2014's Endless Legend and a senior producer on the Nintendo DS version of Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, so fantasy worlds clearly run in his blood.

PCG sat down with Girard, who is acting as creative director for Solasta II, as well as game director Xavier Penin, to discover what's changed since the game's first demo was released and what we can expect in Early Access.

"When I was finishing the demo, I thought the game was almost done because we had a slice of the game and it was playable and we had a story element," says Girard. "The fact is we still had to add a lot to the game in terms of features, in terms of content. It's been a huge endeavor. The game is a beast."

RESPECT THE RULES

Things like the game engine—it runs on UE5—and the underlying D&D ruleset have been updated, “We've switched to the 2024 ruleset of the SRD [system reference document] 5.2 with all the new class, subclass options and powers. Monsters have changed, spells too.”
