Progress for World War One memorial

A GIANT poppy-shaped memorial bearing the names of 1,117,635 British and Commonwealth personnel who died in the First World War is moving toward a permanent home, with a protective pavilion now planned and fundraising under way.

The Poppy of Honour, conceived by Army veteran Terry Williams of Henstridge, Somerset, stands 2.6m tall and features glass panels in the outline of a remembrance poppy. Inside, handwritten paper poppies - each marked with the name and rank of a fallen service member ~ fill the structure as a single, inclusive record of the war dead.

The Royal British Legion granted a user licence for the memorial’s incorporation of the poppy symbol.
