Will world's climate change deniers ever be held to account?
August 05, 2025
|The Journal
IN the recent local elections Reform UK won two thirds of the seats at Durham County Council with just over one third of the votes. One of the first acts of the Reform-led administration has been to pass a motion declaring that there is no longer a climate emergency. As if!
The Reform UK councillors' argument was based on climate change denial, which is just another way of burying one's head in the sand. Sadly, Farage has decided to align himself with Trump on this.
There is scientific consensus on the fact that climate change is real and primarily driven by human activity, especially the burning of fossil fuels.
The consequences are dire. It is not just about having to endure heatwaves, which have been linked to increased mortality in recent summers. Longer dry spells have damaged agriculture in many countries, including the UK, and have increased the frequency of devastating wildfires. California, Canada and Southern Europe have all been badly affected in 2025.
Climate change is also transforming vast areas of fertile land into inhospitable deserts, leading to population displacement.
Another consequence is the melting of glaciers, which is causing sea levels to rise. In the UK this will mean increased coastal erosion and more frequent coastal flooding.
