Protesters hit out at the monarchy during royal visit

ANTI-MONARCHY campaigners protested the King and Queen's visit to Durham on Maundy Thursday but said police and university handling of this had been "farcical".

The protesters, from campaign group Republic, said they had been told they'd not be able to protest outside Durham Cathedral.
A Durham Police spokesperson said that what its officers had told Republic was that, given Palace Green outside of the cathedral was private land, protesters would be advised to make arrangements with the landowner - Durham University.
