A pause in the fierce winds that have fuelled devastating and deadly Los Angeles wildfires helped crews make some progress yesterday, as police arrested a man on suspicion of arson near one of the blazes.
The fires, which have destroyed neighborhoods on all sides of the sprawling metropolis, have so far killed 10 people and destroyed nearly 10,000 structures, with those figures expected to grow.
Authorities imposed a curfew in evacuation zones to help prevent looting, and California National Guard members have been drafted in to secure affected areas, freeing up firefighters and police.
Wind conditions are forecast to improve over the weekend, with gusts between 35mph and 50mph – far less than earlier this week when winds peaked at 80mph. However, President Joe Biden said federal officials expect the winds to remain a threat until at least early next week.
