Zooming through speed awareness tips
March 05, 2025
|The Herald
I WAS much perturbed to open an envelope from Devon and Cornwall Police recently, bearing news that I had been snapped going down the road at 35mph when I should have been going... slower.
-
I've always thought that the idea of speed cameras was to make people drive slower at that moment, so it was a little frustrating to see 'evidence' photos of the back of my car taken by a manned speed gun from someone who must have been hiding behind a parked car and leapt out when they saw me...
In any case, I put my hands up and admitted my temporary lapse, and signed up for a speed awareness course.
Half expecting to have to go along to a conference room at a country club for a painful afternoon of being berated, I was surprised to find that I could opt to take the course online, from a long list of providers.
Fast forward (not too quickly, of course) to the day in question, and I logged on to a Zoom meeting - which also seems inappropriate - for a three-hour 'driver retraining' course. That in itself sounded a bit like George Orwell's 1984, but I was ready in any case for re-education.
