From castles to forest cabins, we found three unique UK stays for an unforgettable group getaway
-
LEEDS CASTLE, KENT
Signs of spring lined the drive on our way up to the castle. A blanket of snowdrops and rabbits darting through the trees. It sets the tone for a stay beautifully.
This staggering structure sits on an island in a lake, improbably beautiful, steeped in history. It once belonged to Henry VIII, and was the home of six medieval queens. It's hard not to feel like royalty as you arrive - even more so when you're staying the night.
FULL FAMILY FUN
Leeds Castle is visited by over half a million people every year, but most of them just come for the day.
One of the joys of a stay is you get all the day-trip facilities at your disposal, so there is plenty to discover.
We strolled the pretty walkways to the activities area, arriving in time to grab a coffee and head to the falconry show. We watched in awe as their Indian rock eagle owl, Timon, and the Harris hawks whizzed around us with precision and control. Then there was a chance to “Meet The Birds” and get even closer to our favourites.
We then challenged ourselves to the famous maze and nearly lost hope, until we turned the final corner. The reward is a 360° view across the maze, from where you can watch people searching below.
There's also the enormous medieval play area, the Knights' Stronghold Playground; plus adventure golf, a children's obstacle course, and a beach in summer. We wondered how many activities our 16-month-old would enjoy, but The Squires' Courtyard Playground is for ages six and under, with zipwire baby swings and slides. So all in all, along with meeting the birds, he was thoroughly entertained.
