Convenience Is Breaking Kashmitr’s Social Fabric
MARCH 26, 2026 ISSUE
|Kashmir Observer
Letter to Editor
-
In my childhood, life in Kashmir moved to the pulse of shared work. Families and neighbours helped one another in harvesting paddy, building homes, chopping wood, and running errands
Work was a language of trust, care, and friendship. Villages and mohallas were knit together through these daily acts of cooperation,
‘A harvest could stretch into a celebration, a house could rise on laughter and collective effort. Everyone contributed, and shared.
Today, that picture has shifted. Most of the work we once did ourselves is now carried out by workers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and other states who earn hundreds or thousands of rupees a day.
