TEAMS desperately searching for Madeleine McCann used special ground-penetrating radar inside derelict buildings yesterday.

A digger was also used to sift through giant mounds of rubble in abandoned farmhouses and outbuildings near the resort of Praia da Luz.

German police officers have spent two days hunting for clues about the three-year-old’s disappearance in Portugal on 3 May 2007.

A tip led them to concentrate on a 123-acre section of headland between Praia da Luz and the town of Lagos.

The site is around two miles from the former home of German prime suspect Christian Brueckner.

The fresh searches by dozens of German and Portuguese officers are being carried out at the request of German federal police.

The ground-penetrating radar - resembling a futuristic lawnmower - was used to search beneath the floors of abandoned buildings.

Officers scanned the ground inside one property while looking at data on a laptop.
