Driver who crashed into cyclist 'thought he had hit a sheep'

A CYCLIST suffered severe injuries to his spine and multiple rib fractures after he was hit from behind by a van driver who failed to see him because of sunlight.

The victim was knocked from his bike and was unable to move due to the pain he was feeling.

David Walters was riding along the B4280 in Bridgend on September 5, 2022, when he was hit by a white Peugeot van driven by the defendant, 60-year-old Wayne Adams.

As a result, Mr Walters lost control and crashed into the side of the carriageway.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on June 20 heard the victim recalled travelling towards the village of Heol y Cyw when he heard a “massive bang”.

The next thing Mr Walters recalled was rolling on the ground and trying to get back up, but was unable to do so.

Following the collision, Adams parked up 50 metres down the road and came back to assist the victim who remained on his front.

Mr Walters said he had pain in his back and chest and he remained on the side of the carriageway until the ambulance arrived.
