I cannot believe Ukraine are being asked to shorten their Army. If they did that what is to stop Russia walking up to Kyiv's front door after the peace deal. Could you see Trump faced with the same scenario, no he'd say "Fight Fight, Fight for America", excuse the pun. That's what independence was all about, standing your ground. They certainly didn't concede any land to the British, all over a cup of tea. So why can't he say to Ukraine "Fight fight fight them in the trenches".
