About 60% of people can’t get through a 10-minute conversation without lying, according to a study from the University of Massachusetts.

We usually do it to be seen as more likeable and competent.

But we're terrible at spotting fibs. A 2006 review gave us a 54% chance - little better than a coin toss of guessing correctly whether someone is lying.

That might be because we're looking for all the wrong signs. Liars know not to give themselves away by fidgeting or avoiding eye contact, found University of Edinburgh boffins.

Lying can make your pupils dilate. That's because it forces your brain to work harder to come up with a believable story, triggering your sympathetic nervous system.
