ALAN Titchmarsh has hit back at the Daily Star's hug-a-slug campaign.

Your newspaper launched the drive to boost the molluscs' reputation after the Royal Horticultural Society said that far from being pests that scoff plants and flowers they boost ecosystems by eating decaying material.

The slugs' poo then fertilises garden soil.
