EUROPEAN POND TURTLE

THE English language has an interesting relationship with the word “turtle” that changes depending on where you are in the world.

If you are in the UK then if it lives only in the sea it’s a turtle, only on land it's a tortoise, and only in freshwater it’s a terrapin.

If you are in America?

Everything is a turtle.

Everything in the water is DEFINITELY a turtle except for a few very specific species which are terrapins.

For ease, I'll be calling the species we talk about by their internationally accepted names.
