Firm drops English name to market Llŷn manor house after local anger

A booking platform has bowed to complaints after giving an English name to an historic Gwynedd property. Plas Bodegroes had been rechristened because its name was a mouthful for English guests.

The Grade II*-listed Georgian manor house on the Llŷn Peninsula was renamed Bromfield Hall - possibly a reference to English architect Joseph Bromfield who built the 10-room property in the 1780s.

The decision caused uproar in a mainly Welsh-speaking community tired of seeing traditional Welsh names misappropriated. It was labelled “shameful” and a “disgrace” to the property's rich heritage.

Until 2006, Plas Bodegroes in Efailnewydd, near Pwllheli, was a hotel that provided Wales’ only Michelin-starred restaurant. The hotel closed in early 2021 and reopened a few months later as a self-catering holiday let for up to 20 people.
