Mum's plea as mental health deaths probe begins

- BY MARTIN BAGOT Health Editor

Our loved ones cannot rest in peace until the truth is exposed

RELATIVES of patients who died under the care of NHS mental health units are hoping a probe will reveal the truth behind the scandal.

More than 2,000 deaths at inpatient facilities in Essex are the subject of the public Lampard Inquiry in London from today.

Campaigner Melanie Leahy is among the bereaved relatives to provide evidence to Baroness Kate Lampard CBE.

Her son Matthew, 20, was found hanging at a clinic in 2012. He had been detained under the Mental Health Act and cared for by the Early Intervention in Psychosis team.

Melanie claimed he called his dad to say he had been raped days before he was found dead at the Linden Centre in Chelmsford.

Police were called but no crimes were recorded.
