First sapling from felled Sycamore Gap tree planted in Coventry

THE first saplings cultivated from the unlawfully felled Sycamore Gap tree have been planted in Coventry as National Tree Week got underway.

Five saplings were placed in the ground on Saturday, with more than half of the 49 “trees of hope” from the sycamore that had stood for over a century in a dip in Hadrian's Wall anticipated to be planted throughout the week.

The tree was intentionally chopped down during the night in September 2023, sparking nationwide outrage and a police inquiry. Earlier this year, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers were convicted over the unlawful felling and received sentences of more than four years imprisonment.
