Sports editor's tales were the stuff of legend

THE great and good of the Midlands press will gather this Friday to say farewell to a legendary Midland sports editor.

Ian Johnson, who died recently, aged 87, was one of the most respected sports journalists of his generation.
Despite being originally from the North East, Mr Johnson became synonymous with Birmingham sport as sports editor of The Sports Argus and later the Post's sister papers, the Birmingham Evening Mail and Sunday Mercury.
He covered the World Cup in Spain in 1982, while back in '78 he was in New Orleans to see Ali beat Leon Spinks.
