FINDING routes to goal that don’t involve Jay Stansfield could well be the key to Birmingham City having a successful season.

- By ALEX DICKEN

Stansfield has embraced the goal-scoring burden in his two full seasons at Blues and the early signs are that he will be the team’s main goal threat in 2025/26 too.

When he isn’t available, Blues can struggle to fashion and finish chances, and that is what we witnessed against Leicester City last time out.

The pressure is on Kyogo Furuhashi and Marvin Ducksch to take some of that weight off Stansfield’s slender shoulders.

Ducksch arrived at Blues a month ago without having had a preseason due to an injury and is still building his fitness. In his first two Blues outings, Ducksch looked off the pace, but it is hoped that two uninterrupted weeks of training will help the 31-year-old German bank the fitness that he has been missing.

Then Blues supporters should hopefully see the best of a player whose record at previous club Werder Bremen was so impressive that it led to Germany call-ups.
