WHERE INDIA STANDS ON EV CHARGING IN 2025

INDIA'S MOBILITY IS steadily shifting to electric, driven by government schemes, rising consumer awareness, and proactive industry policies.

Central to this shift is the establishment of a dependable EV charging network. That network, which has expanded significantly in the past few years and now includes 25,202 public charging points as of December 2024. To achieve India's universal EV vision, massive scale-up and uniformity in the charging infra support supported by bold policies, innovation, as well as public and private partnership models are necessary.

The Current Landscape: EV Charging Infrastructure in India

EV charging stations have rapidly expanded in recent years, fuelled by government support and rising EV adoption. The Number of Public EV Charging Stations (EVPCS) by April 1, 2025 in India as per the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) stood at 26,367. Geographic distribution has some interesting regional dominance. Most of the growth occurred in 2024, when 13,299 new PCS were installed over 50 per cent of the cumulative capacity in just one year. This indicates a significant scale-up phase, particularly across Tier-1 cities and emerging Tier-2 and Tier-3 locations. This infrastructure supports a growing fleet of electric 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, and electric buses, especially in urban clusters and transit hubs.
