When Did We Get So Cynical?
July 12, 2025
|BW Businessworld
SOMEWHERE between clearing the breakfast table and checking unread messages, between work calls and late-night replays of the day, we began to snap more easily. Small things started to feel big. A look away mid-conversation.
A sigh without explanation. A message seen but not replied to. What once would’ve passed with a laugh now lands like a jab - and before we know it, we're caught in another tangle of words and wounded silence.
We Say We're Tired
We say we're tired. And maybe we are. But tired of what, exactly? Of talking - or of not being heard? Of showing up each day with effort that goes unseen? Maybe we're not tired of the world or of work or even of each other. Maybe we're tired of the distance that's crept into spaces where intimacy once lived uninvited.
Indifference is Silent
It’s strange, isn’t it? How two people who love each other can begin to sound like opponents in a courtroom. Each defending their version of the truth. Each waiting for the other to fold first. But in that clash, in that stubborn refusal to walk away, lives the quietest proof that we still care. If we didn't, there wouldn't be noise at all. Indifference is silent. But this - this frustration, this friction - is affection in disguise.
No one teaches us how to love when life gets messy. We think love should be soft, poetic. But it’s not always. Sometimes it’s an exhausted reminder, an impatient text, a clumsy apology wrapped in sarcasm. It hides in a message that says, “Did you eat?” or a complaint that really means, “I need you, and I don’t know how to say it.”
