UNPACKING THE DIFFICULTY OF LIVING: A MIDDLEINCOME BURDEN
August 23, 2025
|BW Businessworld
IGNORE, FOR A MOMENT, the stock market rallies and GDP rankings. Disregard the grand talk of becoming a $5 trillion economy. Step away from government dashboards and global indices, and lean in. Listen instead to the groans from stalled buses, the silent frustration in hospital queues, the despair in families navigating a maze of bureaucracy.
For millions, especially the squeezed middle class, the celebrated 'India growth story' is less a triumph, more a tease.
Middle-Class Suffocating
India's grand narrative of growth rests on uncertain moral ground if it fails to improve the daily lives of its people in tangible ways. The ease of living, defined by responsive governance, reliable infrastructure, and equitable access to essential services, remains largely aspirational. Roads are being built and digital wallets are widespread, yet for many citizens, daily life is still shaped by neglect, inefficiency, and exclusion.
The most visible casualty of this disconnect is India's middle class. This unsung group of 400 million people falls between the safety nets of welfare and the privileges of the elite. They pay taxes, follow rules, and sustain the nation's ambitions, yet see little return. They pay full price for electricity, water, education, and healthcare while navigating public systems that are often indifferent and sometimes hostile.
These citizens do not seek subsidies. They ask only for a system that functions fairly. Instead, they face broken roads, unresponsive officials, and layers of red tape. Their struggle is rooted not in economic poverty but in institutional neglect. Left unaddressed, this quiet frustration threatens to undermine public trust and the credibility of India's development promise.
A Life of Friction
India's middle class suffers not from material poverty, but from institutional poverty.
