BIHAR'S TORCHBEARER: NITISH KUMAR AND THE POLITICS OF PROGRESS
September 20, 2025
|BW Businessworld
The Bihar CM remains what he has always been: the reluctant alchemist of Indian politics, who took a state written off as hopeless and helped it rediscover its hope
THERE ARE leaders who inherit prosperity and administer it. And there are leaders who walk into the storm, carrying a torch and manage to coax light out of darkness. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar belongs firmly in the latter category. For over two decades, he has been both the architect and the custodian of a transformation many once thought impossible.
Bihar, for long caricatured as the land of lawlessness and backwardness, today speaks a different language of roads and schools, of power lines stretching across dusty villages, of investors looking at the state with fresh seriousness. And the man at the helm of this change is a leader who prefers work to rhetoric, sobriety to spectacle: Nitish Kumar, often nicknamed “Sushasan Babu,” the gentleman of good governance.
Rebuilding Brick by Brick
When he first took charge as Chief Minister in 2005, Bihar's reputation was in tatters. Investors avoided it, migrants left it and the very idea of governance seemed alien. Kumar approached this bleak inheritance not with grandiose promises but with methodical reform.
His first war was against fear. Law and order, the oxygen of development, was restored through firmer policing and faster trials. Kidnappings for ransom, a plague that once made headlines, plummeted. Streets that once emptied at dusk saw life return.
Next came roads and power. His government built and repaired thousands of kilometers of highways and village roads, connecting hamlets to markets, children to schools, patients to hospitals. Electricity, once a luxury, began to spread across rural Bihar, powering not only homes but also ambitions.
