From governance and growth to Scope 3 and greenwashing, sustainability is moving into the core of business strategy, demanding sharper data, stronger systems and tougher accountability

BEYOND COMPLIANCE, TOWARDS STRATEGY

SUSTAINABILITY in India Inc. is no longer treated as a parallel function, an annual reporting obligation or a reputational layer outside the business. It is moving into the centre of decision-making, where strategy, governance, supply chains, cost structures, market access and long-term resilience meet. Companies are increasingly being compelled to confront sustainability not as an abstract aspiration, but as an operating reality.

That shift is visible across sectors. For some, the pressure comes from value chains and emissions. For others, it stems from regulation, capital investment or export-market requirements. In consumer-facing industries, it is also shaped by the tension between environmental ambition and what customers are willing to absorb.

Where Scope 3 Gets Real

At the heart of this transition lies Scope 3 emissions, which force companies to look beyond their own facilities and into procurement, logistics, vendor ecosystems and product use. Amit Dayal, Chief Sustainability Officer, JSW Energy, points to the operational challenge this creates. “Suppliers often lack the capability to conduct lifecycle assessments. We had to train our internal procurement teams over several iterations to improve data quality,” he says.

His observation reflects a wider challenge. Scope 3 is often discussed as a disclosure issue, but in reality, it is a capability issue. It demands stronger supplier engagement, better coordination and a willingness to work with imperfect systems rather than wait for ideal conditions. Because a large part of corporate emissions sits outside direct operations, climate ambition now depends on whether companies can shape behaviour and build capacity across the chain.

THE RESERVE BANK of India's latest policy pause, experts say, looks less like calm control and more like cautious procrastination, with rates unchanged and the stance labelled “neutral” – a term that increasingly masks uncertainty rather than conviction.
