London was calling for Nigel and Kay Hutson, so they hit the town and enjoyed a spot of 'Waterloo’
-
A trip to London with our 'van wasn't really among our plans, but the conversation went along the lines of, “I think that I've messed up your birthday present,” said Kay. “Oh, and why's that?” I asked. “Well, I've booked something, but I've booked for an evening event rather than the matinee.”
Without finding out what Kay had booked, I did discover that it was in London; so while trying to lift her spirits, I said that I'd take care of the logistics, and that could be part of her birthday present from me (late December). At that point, I didn't really consider using the 'van - but looking at train travel from home, and then a night's hotel accommodation, made my eyes water!
A few days later I was just 'surfing' and happened to think about London again and, inevitably, campsites. For the price of one night in a hotel, we could have several at the CAMC Abbey Wood site, somewhere that we'd never been to before. And the cost of fuel would be less than half the train fares!
Abbey Wood Our drive to the Abbey Wood site went well until the last half a mile or so when I took a wrong turn, but eventually we arrived and were greeted by a very friendly warden who told us that they'd done exactly the same thing when they first arrived. “You know the area very well now then?” she quipped!
We were soon set up and spent the evening considering what we were going to do (apart from the evening of my birthday) over the next few days. The weather forecast for the following day was good before turning back to being grey and wet for the remainder of the stay, and for once it was right.
