A bottle of red wine into my first date with hotel manager Luca*, aged 40, we swapped our worst dating stories. I recalled a first date I’d had in Colombia, where the man couldn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak Spanish. ‘He was a lovely guy,’ I said. ‘He brought his 19-year-old nephew to the date to translate and it was so awkward.’ Luca and I both laughed, and for the first time in a long time, I felt a little spark.
