Our celebration of the New Year is particularly fervent because 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine. The actual date will arrive in December, but this month’s cover by Joel Spector kicks off our commemoration of this milestone.
We’re also starting this celebratory year with a first for AHMM: Dale Berry’s “Not a Creature Was Stirring . . .” is our initial foray into graphic fiction (comics, graphic short stories, sequential art—call them what you will, we are delighted with the result).
This issue offers some glimpses of our office’s surroundings, with a holiday illustration by Hank Blaustein and several stories set in Manhattan: Kevin Egan’s peek into what goes on in the judge’s chambers in “The Wizard of 60 Centre Street”; a Wall Street sleight of hand in “Suppose there Is Nothing,” by James L. Ross; Joseph Goodrich’s suspenseful “Incident on Clinton Street”; and Terrie Farley Moran’s Depression-era P.I. tale, “Inquiry and Assistance.”
Meanwhile, icy back roads present unexpected hazards in “Eternity Met” by Lucas Gray, but a tropical setting is no paradise in “Girlie” by Steven Utley and Alex C. Renwick. Private detectives R. J. and Ginny Carr sift through family dynamics to get at the truth in “The Finlay Millions” by S. L. Franklin. Jay Carey shows how the ravages of global warming affect police work in “We Are Caught in a Net.” The psychologist–patient relationship is anything but simple in Paul Lees-Haley’s eerie thriller “The Therapist.” And Eve Fisher’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” raises questions about evil in the lingering aftereffects of a deadly crime.
Finally, international intrigue reigns in two of our stories this month. In “Smothered Mate” by Steven Liskow, much depends on who wins the world chess championship; and “Shaken, Not Stirred” by Diana Deverell catches Special Agent Dawna Shepherd off guard at SpyGirl Fantasy Camp.
Murder and mayhem across the globe never grow old!
