Our sleuths and fixers have their thinking caps on this issue. Robert Lopresti’s “Christmas Dinner” takes us to New York City’s Chinatown, where a holiday dinner turns fatal and only Beat poet and sleuth Ellery Delgardo can untangle the mystery. In sixteenth century France, an animal avocat must make a case on behalf of a family of birds who are disrupting Mass in Mark Thielman’s “From Above.” The murder of a restaurateur appears to be politically motivated, serving Melbourne detectives Brock and Portman a complex case in A. F. Bhuyan’s procedural “The Borsch Assassinations.” Ecuadoran P.I. Wilson Salinas returns in Tom Larsen’s “Las Hermanas Cubanas” when his nemesis Captain Ernesto Guillén becomes his client. A minor road rage incident pulls a newly widowed cop into an investigation out of his district in “Protection” by Nick Guthrie. St. Louis gambler Henry Frederickson has the smarts to see through ruses, and that’s why a plainclothes police officer asks for his help in Christopher Latragna’s “Things Being What They Are.” And when three boys at a boarding school in war-time England witness a murder, they take it upon themselves to follow up the clues in “The Thieves of St. Ives” by Stephen Ross.
