The dictionary definition of ‘island’ throws up words such as enclave, haven and sanctuary, each helping to conjure up that sense of escapism, where the surrounding waters of an island act as a force field safeguarding you from the unwanted intrusions of daily life.
That force field works on over-drive in the Maldives to ensure the power of laptops, phones and other plugged-in paraphernalia doesn’t overshadow the adventure. Knowing how hard it is to pry technology from one’s fingertips, best-in-class resorts are reinventing their island offerings and thinking outside the box to entice engagement. This issue, we look to some of our favourite properties to see how they are taking the island experience to the next level.
We also travel to Lisbon to unveil a living masterpiece. A coastal capital awash with art as fine as its dining, from hotels with museum-worthy art collections to intimate Michelin-starred restaurants, it’s a trip that’s full of surprises.
With the Holy Month now here, we turn to the region’s hotels that are helping create memories through beautiful iftars, suhours and stays, as well as the jewellery brands, such as Mahallati, that are inspiring our Eid gifting choices. As this month offers time for reflection, in turn I hope this issue offers you new ways to truly escape, switch off and be present.
