What made the massive basking shark beach itself in Blue Hill last week? Researchers took samples of the shark to find out. In Brooksville, the feds have spent tens of millions of dollars cleaning up the Callahan Mine, and the work is coming to an end (but don't eat the shellfish—maybe ever—warns an official). Meanwhile, in Blue Hill, PFAS are found in 30 percent of tested wells in Blue Hill. On a happier note, The Packet announces a new content-sharing agreement that brings more news to readers, and the Brooklin Food Corps plans a community party.

Blue Hill names a new chief to the fire department, while Brooklin wrestles with an old boiler at its school. Sails were everywhere last weekend, with the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta as well as a statewide dinghy championship in Blue Hill Bay. Plus, the little-known story of how a Sedgwick man ran an underwater "extension cord" to an island. And a really, really big shark washes up near the Falls Bridge.

George Stevens Academy is in the spotlight this week, as the academy announces a return to its homestay model for housing international students, and a new head of school shares his aspirations for the upcoming school year. Elsewhere in Blue Hill, August begins with celebrations of all things blueberry and maritime. 

After 200 years looking over Maine Street, Blue Hill's largest elm will be cut down. The real “Sal” reads One Morning in Maine in front of nearly 500 people. One of the biggest gatherings in the world of wooden boats happens this weekend. And Blue Hill floats some new ideas for traffic control as it grapples with summer congestion.

The annual alewife runs on the Bagaduce Watershed are underway, accompanied by flocks of eagles seeking to get their share of the fish. Brooklin plans to vote again on the major renovation proposal for the town's school. The anticipated closure dates for the Blue Hill Falls Bridge are updated. A local man completes his 500th run up Blue Hill Mountain. And, at a recent select board meeting, the topic of dogs in Blue Hill’s Seaside Cemetery comes up again, but no action is taken.

Spring is springing. The George Stevens Academy sports teams have commenced their spring seasons. In other vernal news, we have a story (and, yes, a photo!) of a spring peeper, one of many aptly named chorus frogs now in full song each evening. In Surry, we offer a summary of what voters can expect at their upcoming town meeting. And, as the seasonal tempo increases, you'll find many stories on area activities.

The lead story this week is about a George Stevens Academy graduate whose artwork has been chosen for the newly designed Maine license plate, to be issued beginning in 2025. With town meetings and local elections coming up in early April in both Blue Hill and Brooklin, we have stories detailing the candidates and warrant articles. And, with a near total solar eclipse coming to our area on Monday, April 8, we offer a special spread, with need-to-know details and fun facts. 

Brooklin is in the news this week. We have a story and map covering the town's new comprehensive plan. A new date is set for Brooklin residents to vote on the proposed school renovation plan. In Blue Hill, the select board is questioning funding for a summer camp. And, we have continuing coverage on the outside construction work at Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital.

In town coverage, we report on Brooksville's annual town meeting. Sedgwick elections leave one unfilled seat on both the three-person select board and the five-person school board. A future election will be scheduled to try to fill the vacancies. And local libraries are busy with activities, as winter makes way for spring.

The Brooklin Garden Club presents primroses to all teachers and staff at George Stevens Academy in appreciation for their dedication to students and the community. Sedgwick elects its public officials, though there is some uncertainty as to whether the write-in candidate for Selectmen will serve. And, in the aftermath of January’s storms, there is some rethinking about coastal infrastructure. We have the in-depth story. 

We have a preview of the upcoming Brooksville town meeting and a brief profile of a declared write-in candidate for the school board. There is a feature story about a sewing group coming together to make clothes for newborns. A Penobscot resident, with strong ties to Blue Hill, has been named as managing editor for the Penobscot Bay Press newspapers.

In Sedgwick news this week we have photos and a story on the Fire Department’s new rescue vehicle. The warrant portion of the annual town meeting will be delayed because finance data is not fully ready. There are no candidates on the ballot for open town offices in the election March 1. In Brooksville, the long-running dispute between the town and Buck’s Harbor Marina owner John Buck continues to work through the court system, piling up legal fees for the town. We provide the details in a catch-up story.

“The Nub” parcel of land has been given to the Town of Blue Hill. A drone image shows its proximity to the road. The “Behind the Curtain” column explains just that. An event in Brooklin featuring cold water “dippers” was the top fundraiser in the state in support of domestic violence survivors. There is a moose sighting and an extra high tide sighting.
