In this issue's special section on Apps & iDevices, we have a story on how AIS functions can be performed by a smartphone or tablet app. Several company are offering apps that will provide sailors with AIS data via cell phone networks. We'll look at these apps and their pros and cons. Our second story has a survey a variety of sailing, navigation, communication and weather apps that provide useful for voyagers. We make some recommendations about which ones might prove most valuable. In our Power Voyaging section marine engine expert Steve D'Antonio explains how to read exhaust smoke and what it is saying about your diesel engine. In our Ocean Voyaging story we have a lyrical story about sailing to Greenland and the unexpected beauty and mystery a voyaging couple discovers there while visiting the capital of Nuuk, then sailing north of the Arctic Circle to fabled Disko Bay.
