BBC曾經對700多位老師做調查：片語動詞到底困難在哪，結果第一名的答案是「片語動詞的意思會隨著後面的介系詞、副詞改變意思」（47%）；再來是「同一組片語動詞有很多不同的意義」（36.4%）。原來片語動詞學不好不是沒道理，因為連老外自己也很苦惱。
 
大多數人在學片語動詞時，看到動詞便下意識忽略了後面的介系詞、副詞，然而這些細節隱含著「動作」和「空間」的關聯，如in把活動或事件看做一個容器，像fit in（適應）、pencil in（暫訂）；on表示一個面，暗示「將某事置於…之上」，所以有build on（建立於）、go/move on（繼續）；at指能量聚集於一點， gaze/glance/stare at（盯著看）、catch at（抓住）。「片語動詞」比起「單字動詞」更強調動作發生的瞬間，既有畫面、方向，更有動能。
 
英文要好，不是單字必須越背越難，而是開始用能簡單的字創造交流。

大家好，我是一張圖搞懂雜誌的總編輯王妍筑，要和大家宣佈一個很沉重的消息，本刊紙本雜誌《一張圖搞懂》由於營運和轉型考量，確定於本期（2020年3月號）之後，實體雜誌正式吹熄燈號。

近期由於實體雜誌市場的大環境改變，我們不斷思考並實踐如何能為台灣英語教育市場帶來不同的價值和觀點，也確實得到讀者朋友肯定和讚許。

直到確定停止出版前的最後一刻，編輯部仍然在規劃如「不打烊的英文老師」、「一生必讀的8首英文詩」、「英文時光機」等題目，即便到最後，我們仍希望為實體雜誌盡到最後一分心力，未來我們將會全力籌備屬於《一張圖搞懂》的數位體驗內容，決心用更適合讀者的方式再現。

最後一刊的封面故事「30天英文日記挑戰」，是日記、也是遊戲，每天都有意想不到的關卡等著你破解，像是：Day 1用祈使句寫下待辦清單、Day 3用頻率副詞紀錄我的生活習慣、Day 16用進行式寫下我正在為目標努力些什麼、Day23用cost/spend/take寫出今天的消費......。

我們想說的是，你不需要寫得多好，才能開始，而是要先開始，才會變好。

你以為的台北，和老外視角看見的台北，到底不同在哪裡？住在台北的人們對於這個城市，多半已習以為常，甚至感到平淡無奇，但為什麼卻有不少老外「超哈台」？

編輯部這次採訪了4位在台的外籍人士，他們都是住在台北的英文老師，在職業的背後，他們各自說了4段與台北共振的故事，有人認為台北是他心目中的波希米亞，有人在來台北以前，還以為全台灣都是佛教徒。

跳脫文化的同溫層、超越語言的侷限，原來他們看見的美好，不止在美食和友善的人，而是這個處處彌漫著多元和共存的空間。

在編輯部截稿前一天,《英國牛津字典》(Oxford Dictionaries),宣布了其選定的2019年度代表字Climate Emergency氣候緊急狀態;《柯林斯英語詞典》 (Collins Dictionary)則不謀而合地選出Climate Strike氣候 罷工。回顧2019年,不外乎是超乎尋常的環境氣候議 題:亞馬遜大火、瑞典女孩號召的氣候罷工,甚至在 我寫稿的當下,澳洲東南部的叢林大火正在延燒!
撇除這些新聞媒體是否過度渲染氣候變遷,編輯部的 夥伴看見的,是現代人的「心理氣候」,這次封面故 事《2020關鍵字》挑選了科技、媒體、經濟、社會人 文、環境類的關鍵字,每個字的背後都藏著問題,也 預示了機會,像黑暗世界通往光明的一把鑰匙,滿足 了某層面的知識、經驗上的需求。哲學家維根斯坦: 「語言為我們的世界畫出邊界。」我們希望2020每個 人都能掌握這些單字,而不是只有隱約的感覺,每種 關鍵議題都能用英文清楚說出自己的看法。

最讓人苦惱的小字
我們Instagram的追蹤者曾跟我們反映:「單字」不會還可以 查字典,偏偏就是「介系詞」,不知道自己這樣用對不對,也 不知道如何查起,一切難道只能憑感覺?
在寫英文email的時候,一定很多人都遇過類似情況:要不要 加to?還是at?這樣一個小小的字,卻可能是寄出前,讓所有 人都曾苦惱的字。就怕一個不精準,埋下誤會的導火線。
介系詞的用法靈活,要是過度依賴中文翻譯去學習,很容易就 搞不清楚,例如:她在董事會「裡」,介系詞不用”in”而是” on”,“She is on the board.”,更多時候,則是遺漏了介系 詞,例如:「訂閱我的頻道」是subscribe“to”my channel,to 就經常被漏掉了。
一個一個記,不如一塊一塊看
介系詞規則想起來很複雜,但仔細算起來也只有150個。搞懂 它最好的方法是——把它看做是「單字、片語」,以「字塊記 憶」的方式加深印象,例如:on behalf of、on account of、on top of,透過本期封面故事的歸納,整理成空間感、時間感、 方向感、動作感的用法,讓眼睛停留幾秒,並且唸出來,加深 印象,一次搞懂150個介系詞。
 讓人苦惱的小字,從此變成你的「直覺感應字」。


Instagram：「每個人平均有150個followers」
這期討論領導溝通力，你可能會認為「領導者」離你很遙遠，可有趣的是，在社群媒體上幾乎每個人都是leader，根據IG的統計，每個人平均擁有150個follower，從少數人的權威命令，到每個人都至少被100個人認同而追隨，透過照片、文字、影音，leadership是一種魅力，更是一種溝通語言。

每出現一個新的字彙，其實都定義了某個現象。美國方言協會(American Dialect Society)每年都會票選出年度詞選，本期封面故事特地挑選了幾個近年有趣的字，像是Situationship 是Situation + Relationship描述戀人未滿的情況，還有給長輩看的假IG帳號Fake Instagram衍生而出的Finsta。
  
約翰‧歐康納(Johnson O'Connor, 1891-1973)是美國著名的心理測量師和教育家，他畢生提倡單字量的重要性，他曾說過"A person's vocabulary level was the best single measure for predicting occupational success in every area."(一個人的單字水準是用來測量事業是否成功的最佳單一指標，而且對各行各業都適用。)，他長年致力於找尋「單字量」和「成功」的關聯，發現單字水準越高的人，在學業與事業的表現也都越好。在2012年，美國布魯金斯研究院調查中發現，5歲的孩子的識字能力，顯著影響了他們在學校的表現，甚至成人階段的收入。

當珍珠奶茶店開進巴黎羅浮宮
2018年7月，歐洲人排爆羅浮宮廣場，這家珍奶羅浮宮分店在透明金字塔的正下方，左邊是Prada，對面是Apple，它是亞洲第一個茶品牌進駐羅浮宮，從Local一頭撞進Global，國際市場竟能為他們瘋狂。

日出茶太這個亞洲品牌，不單需要克服了語言屏障，還要適應各種文化的價值觀，珍珠奶茶今年在日本突然大受年輕女性族群的喜愛，不過這也不是第一次的珍奶熱，這次日本人甚至把「珍奶」一詞變成動詞「タピる」、「タピ活（珍奶活動）」等新興用詞。剛開始學英文，我們因為不習慣，很容易忽略動詞用得對不對，例如：業績成長該用grow (發展、成長) 而非grow up (長大)，只有人才會grow up，合約書上「寫」什麼，應該用say而不是直譯成write。

為什麼我們學了這麼久的英文，卻經常用了好多含糊的動詞而不自知？答案是，我們多半太急躁。技巧是一回事，真正困難的是「打造跨文化思維」。像是拿捏和老外的「社交距離」、如何評價老外、如何理解老外的價值觀、人際觀，這些「看不見的語言」一如珍奶杯底裡，看不見的珍珠，我們以為「學不來」，但其實我們只是「沒看到」，直到慢慢吸一口，咀嚼幾回後，才能說我們真的有「學到英文」吧！

深夜裡的無眠英文課 
食物像語言一樣，都是文化的載體，台灣的夜市小吃承襲了多元文化的樣貌，因為有荷蘭、日本、客家、閩南跟原住民文化的糅合，才得以創造出我們飲食文化中「混血」的面貌。

夜市小吃好不好吃我想是其次，而是漫步在夜市的飲食經驗，在我們各自的心中有種共享卻又私房的記憶，傍晚踩著拖鞋，隨意走到一個攤位便能「團團坐」，我們分享食物、相互挾菜，象徵著彼此相互關照，這種活躍而「感性」的群體飲食經驗，和西方強調「獨食」，重視「理性」的飲食觀大相徑庭，中西飲食文化的情懷與趣味，也體現在不同用料、烹調方式、上菜節奏。不管是旅人還是在地人，別把美食記憶只留在手機裡，因為真正讓人魂牽夢縈的滋味，都在充滿冒險的體驗與故事裡。
 
既然飲食文化是種交流的捷徑，那麼一道道熟悉而家常的夜市小吃，為什麼不能是一堂堂深夜裡無眠的英文課？


一份來自教授的禮物

語言不僅僅影響你說什麼，還會影響你的認知。試著閉上眼睛，想像一幅畫，畫的中間是一頭象，背景為叢林，請問你會注意大象多一點，還是留意叢林久一些？研究發現讓西方人與東方人看同一幅畫，西方人的注意力大量聚集在中間的物體，而且觀察細微，有趣的是，東方人傾向觀察背景以及背景和主體的關聯，看得廣，因此也不特別留意細節。東西的文化差異，從這個研究便有跡可循，西方強調主體，東方在意主體與整體的「依存關係」。在這次封面故事中，台大外文系史嘉琳教授提到，華人社交互動模式多以「合作」為基本原則，西方人常偏向「競爭」，越乖的人反而在西方社會被視為低競爭力，更進一步探討為什麼外國人為什麼這麼愛嘲諷，又為什麼華人不愛的主因，史嘉琳教授的文章讀起來有一種安心感，她明明不是台灣人，卻比任何人還在乎台灣人到底怎麼學好英文。

由於英文是個揉雜了眾多文化的語言，華人要完全理解西方社會，確實需要長時間的文化浸泡，東吳英文系曾泰元教授便挑選了數個故事性強，又富含高知識密度的系列經典字，他的文章總能滿足讀者的好奇心，驚喜萬分，越讀越有滋味，從地名詞到人名詞，再從語源講解到典故，無論你是初學還是進階，都能自然而然理解更深層次的英文文化。

緩速時間的秘方
回想我的童年，我每年大概有200天是騎自行車上課，這樣的日子過了7年，可是這一千多天的記憶，多數我都不記得，可以說根本全糊在一起了，反而是旅行的記憶，清晰而恆長，像是第一次瞥見的遼闊景色、第一次與當地人交談，甚至第一次在大白天遭到搶劫，時而驚喜、時而驚險，回想每一幕皆歷歷在目。

原來比起重複的日常，「第一次」的經歷更容易留下記憶。旅行就像打開感官的開關一樣，流動的景物、未知的事物，足以賦予人能量，迸出新的觀點。我對時間的感知，也因旅行而變慢、變長了。

【刻意練習名詞】
增加美選民信心的magic word
2008年正逢美國總統大選，社會心理學家Christopher Bryan針對低迷的投票率，和史丹佛大學做了一個問卷實驗，其中的關鍵字，一組換成了動詞to vote另一組是名詞to be a voter，看最後哪組人真的會投票的機率高。

名詞：”How important is it to you to be a voter in the upcoming election?”
動詞：”How important is it to you to vote in the upcoming election?”
結果竟然是名詞組(96%)，比動詞組(82%)多了10%以上的投票率。

研究發現，原來當人用名詞形容自己，會比用動詞還來得有認同感與價值感。比起動詞，名詞能直接說出我是誰，並驅動人在真實生活落實行動。

你也曾用美劇學英文嗎？
根據Pearson的調查，學英文的人有58%曾透過看美劇或電影學英文。用美劇的英文學習失敗率很高，可能是大家習慣「看字幕」而不是「聽對話」，大部分台灣人對於「關掉字幕」這件事極度不安。
想要看美劇學好英文，第一個是，有策略。不是完全不能看字幕，而是要有策略地關掉它：第一遍用中文看，第二遍用英文看，第三遍請完全相信自己的耳朵，享受它。但更重要是第二個，信任感。

一本為台灣上班族寫的英文雜誌

Design a Better City   設計一個以人為中心的城市
印度每年的車禍死亡人數是全世界最高，交通部長為了降低事故率，推廣「3D立體斑馬線」的概念，這個斑馬線，從路人的角度看或許沒什麼感覺，但從駕駛的角度看，就像地上真的長出一排路障，起到提前警示的效果，讓駕駛人不得不提前減速。台北今年也針對幾個路口，試辦了這樣既有趣又讓人安心的斑馬線。
 
這次封面故事是Design a Better City，介紹了溫哥華的“More Awesome Now”的計劃，原本了無生氣的巷弄搖身一變，成了IG熱門的打卡景點“Alley-Oop”，這只是溫哥華市區200多條巷弄的其中一條，未來不只是增加市中心30%的步行空間，更促進了30%人與人的互動；丹麥哥本哈根Strøget是歐洲最長的徒步區，政府讓原本飽受交通之苦的大街變得 “Walkable”，創造出時速5公里的公共空間，街道儼然變成住家的延伸。

無論是舊城區的復甦，還是新市鎮的開發，Design a better a city，我們想要說的是，生活在城市中裡的每一個人，都可能是改變城市設計的推手。

代名詞就像名詞的替身，代替句子中先前提過的名詞，避免相同的字被重複使用。以最常使用的人稱代名詞來說，許多人講英文經常He、She不分，或是明明該用I開頭，卻誤用成me，雖然聽得懂，但聽起來就像還在學說話的小朋友，句句充滿文法錯誤。I是主詞，me是受詞，不知道怎麼判斷用I還是me的時候，看誰是主、誰是客就可以了，救我是“Help me.”這裡的我是接受協助的，是「客」，用受格me；我打給你叫“I called you. ”這裡的我是打電話的人，是「主」，用主格I。
沒有代名詞的語言
有沒有不用人稱代名詞的語言呢？答案是有的，一個經典代表是日文，日文的人稱代名詞能省則省,若要稱呼對方，會直接稱呼對方的名字，用了代名詞反而有種「那個人」的距離感，但在英文裡，若聽見人用he或she來代表事物，反而是一種親密的意味，例如：I love Taipei. She is a gorgeous city.代名詞在英文的語言裡就是這樣時而扮演綠葉、時而扮演紅花，封面故事從主客關係的「人稱代名詞」、關注自己的「反身代名詞」、強調整體性的「不定代名詞」一直到身兼代名詞與連接詞的「關係代名詞」，一步步帶讀者理解英文代名詞。

簡單，就有力量
對於「捨棄」，我們恐怕誤解大於理解，以為捨棄就和苦行僧沒兩樣，捨棄不全然等於「節儉」，而是用「減法」過人生，割捨掉無法帶給你快樂的事物，珍惜留下的物品，這樣的概念在於「平衡」，而不是「過度」。
台灣人學英文太仰賴背單字，最後變成背得越多，卻也忘得越多，許多人便從此失去了學習的動力，喪失了學習與休息的「平衡」。

學英文”quality”比”quantity”還要關鍵
學英文，少，反而更好，尤其是強調效率的商務場合，太「依賴」I think、I feel這些字給你的安全感，容易讓母語人士聽來模棱兩可，甚至覺得你很囉嗦，立場又不明確。因此，這次封面故事討論了《美好生活提案：極簡主義》，從生活割捨不必要的物品，幫助我們發現生命中真正重要的事物，再到「用減法學英文」，告別句子的曖昧感，捨棄往死背單字的概念，深入學習每個小字，才能活用英文；視覺造句專欄《最具影響力的小字：If》特地幫讀者創造了一段故事，只要讀一遍，就能理解If在各種情況下的理性與感性，有「承諾」、「想像」也有「後悔」與「早知道」，聽出每句話的真真假假。

We are our choices. 我們每分每秒都在做選擇，有些選擇小到甚至無法察覺，例如：早上要不要多賴床五分鐘？要不要等綠燈亮起再過馬路？中午一個人吃還是和同事吃？大至困難的抉擇：要留在城市打拚，還是回家鄉做點小生意？要不要結婚？乃至於要不要生小孩？你的選擇不單塑造了你的人生，更反映了你的價值觀。

我們都曾面臨過困難的決定，有時候我在想，為什麼學校裡沒有一門「決定學」的必修課，若我們早學過如何面對這些困境，那麼人生會不會是截然不同的版本？

Story 1
我現在要說一個跟公仔面有關的故事
「午餐肉煎蛋公仔面，唔該！」這是我第一次用粵語成功點到的餐。
讀大學的時候，我有段時間在香港讀書，起初完全不擔心學校的語言問題，加上英文又剛好是我的強項，只是搬到那一周後，我最大的挫折不是上課聽不懂，而是無法應付下課後的日常生活。儘管香港觀光發達，但仍有許多商家、攤販只講粵語，英文、普通話（中文）根本不好使，學校鐘聲一打，同學下課後一律只講粵語，我錯愕得像一隻斷翅的鳥，連社交也硬生生被按下靜音鍵，有口難言。於是我開始意識到學粵語的必要，我從學校餐廳拿了一張菜牌（menu），請室友一道菜、一道菜地唸給我聽，往後點餐的時候，只要前面每點完一個人，我就踩向前一步，一邊心裡默念一次：「午餐肉煎蛋公仔面、午餐肉煎蛋公仔面」，每次搭車的時候，我強迫自己和小巴司機溝通：「唔好意思，我要去旺角，係邊度落車？」（不好意思，我要去旺角，要在哪邊下車？）

Show and Tell
英美國家的小學生必上的一堂活動課就是Show and tell，這堂課要每個人從家裡帶一樣東西來分享，可能是自己喜歡的玩具或是有意義的禮物，上了這樣一課堂，小學生學會了兩件事：一是分享，二是表達。
就算是講自己的母語，也要歷經這番淬鍊，才能把故事說精采。英文要說得動人、有畫面、有說服力，就不只是單字和文法，你得有說故事的準備，讓聽者如臨其境，感受你的情緒，有共鳴。
說故事可以用「講」的（telling），像是一個人很高tall、生氣angry，也可以用「演」的（showing），像是他的臉都漲紅了flushing、聲音變大聲loud。開始捨棄靜態字（stative verbs）改用動態字（active verbs），讀者會不知不覺走進你的畫面，一不小心，也變成你故事的一部份。

看看生活周遭，為什麼點閱率創新高的內容，往往是只有幾頁的懶人包？
為什麼越精緻的餐廳，能選擇的料理卻不多？

因為越是簡單的東西，大腦越輕鬆，只要太囉嗦，就不容易被人記在腦海，在這次TED專欄裡提到，我們的日常生活與複雜的統計數據環環相扣，只不過我們看見的面貌是邏輯分析、簡化後的數字，從天氣預報、Netflix推薦片單、選票預測，紛亂的數據一旦經過詮釋，了無生氣的數字一下子就變成與我們息息相關的資訊，簡單來說，統計學把複雜的世界變得更好理解。

那麼，學習英文也有這種簡化的可能嗎？答案是有。中文的寫作方式有起承轉合，是循環的模式，英文則是單刀直入，循直線的發展模式，如果用中文的邏輯去理解英文，就很容易陷在繁瑣的英文結構上，導致「見樹不見林」。封面故事完整地介紹整體性的閱讀策略，其中「文章結構圖」則幫助辨認文章類型來找「主題句」、「問題與解方」、「描述順序」、「作者目的」，預測文章類型的「訊號字」（signal words），它就像是旅途中的路標一樣，告訴你我們現在位於何處，什麼時候又進入了新的里程碑，輕輕喚醒你的英文邏輯力。
