BBC曾經對700多位老師做調查：片語動詞到底困難在哪，結果第一名的答案是「片語動詞的意思會隨著後面的介系詞、副詞改變意思」（47%）；再來是「同一組片語動詞有很多不同的意義」（36.4%）。原來片語動詞學不好不是沒道理，因為連老外自己也很苦惱。大多數人在學片語動詞時，看到動詞便下意識忽略了後面的介系詞、副詞，然而這些細節隱含著「動作」和「空間」的關聯，如in把活動或事件看做一個容器，像fit in（適應）、pencil in（暫訂）；on表示一個面，暗示「將某事置於…之上」，所以有build on（建立於）、go/move on（繼續）；at指能量聚集於一點， gaze/glance/stare at（盯著看）、catch at（抓住）。「片語動詞」比起「單字動詞」更強調動作發生的瞬間，既有畫面、方向，更有動能。英文要好，不是單字必須越背越難，而是開始用能簡單的字創造交流。 “Supposing is good, but finding out is better.” ― Mark Twain
