Who would have thought that even the simplest of words could become Gen-Z vernacular? Case in point: ate. ATE [ɛt,eɪt] verb, past tense of eat; ATE [ɛt,eɪt] verb, slang, a high compliment usually for someone who exceeded expectations or performed exceptionally well. While “ate” feels interchangeable with “slay”, the latter is apparently no longer in vogue. Also, ATE [ɛt,eɪt] noun, the Men’s Folio May ’26 theme for our first-ever food-focused issue.
As the team prepared to dive into this foreign territory, we knew that it would not be a food-food issue. There are no commentaries on the state of Singapore’s ailing F&B scene, reviews of the newest and swankiest restaurants and bars, or interviews with restaurateurs or chefs. Instead, this issue explores connections between food and fashion, watchmaking, and other lifestyle perspectives; think of it as an interpretation. This is where the theme really kept us on the right track without boxing ourselves in, which could ultimately detract us from our DNA. As you flip the pages, have an open mind, but most importantly, don’t hate.
