In this issue, we explore ideas of newness and its relationship with the very concept of time, something we are privileged to discuss with famed physicist Professor Brian Cox in an exclusive interview (pg. 56) at the incredible IWC Schaffhausen booth at Watches and Wonder Geneva.

Watches and Wonders Geneva blessed us with the new. Some of the Maisons came up with daring new concepts, such as Grand Seiko’s Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon (pg. 64) or Hermès’ profoundly intriguing Arceau Duc Attelé (pg. 68). Others, like Patek Philippe (pg. 52), made new its World Time expression, adding a never-before-seen layer of sophistication to the complication.
Some dreamt up exciting new ideas in aesthetics. Rolex pushed the envelope of what its iconic Oyster Perpetual Chronograph could be (pg. 50), while Zenith brought us new Defy Skyline Chronographs (pg. 58).

It’s something that Louis Vuitton is doing as well, as it reveals its Pre-Fall collection in pg. 18. Dior does the same, astounding us with Gravity Leather in pg. 24.

We also have a new set of 10 August Men of Tomorrow to introduce to you (pgs. 72 – 93). Meet the pianist who left home at 16 to study music from the Masters, or the linguistics academic preserving Kristang for the next generation. Meet the indie rapper who brings a whole new definition to musical DIY, and the lawyer whose cases have shaped Singapore’s sociocultural and socioeconomic landscape.

Thai actor and our cover star for this issue, Naphat ‘Nine’ Siangsomboon, is becoming more than just a romantic lead, and we explore with him this newness in his evolution as a performer and entertainer in pgs 44 – 49. On our cover, he’s sporting Franck Muller's Long Island Evolution, a watch that perfectly encapsulates this idea of newness. With exciting new complications and codes of design, the Long Island Evolution is a temporal novelty unto its own.

“I don’t care what you say,” local musician Tim De Cotta proclaims in his song Art Pure. “I’m gonna keep my art pure.” 

Picking up from our last issue, we continue our contemplation on art, delving deeper into its role in moulding worldviews and zeitgeists. We look at art as an emblem of boldness, as the flag of rebels against the norm. In this, we stand with the likes of Oliver Peoples (pg.25), Baume & Mercier (pg. 66), Dior (pg. 18) and Giorgio Armani (pg. 20). In the same spirit, we also call to mind that soaring collaboration between Maison Margiela and Gentle Monster (pg. 18) 

But art can also be subtle and gentle. Its power can sometimes be understated, but when revealed at the right moment, can be more dazzling than the sun. We see this in Cartier’s Trinity (pg. 26) and the slender Girard-Perragaux 38mm Copper Diamond Bezel (pg. 74). 

And true art is eternal. Just ask Loro Piana, who are celebrating a century of inspiration and heritage (pg. 22). Or, read in on our conversation with Jaeger-LeCoultre CEO Catherine Rénier (pg.54) as she gives us a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of the magnificent Duomètre Heliotourbillon Perpetual. 

Tim De Cotta himself is one of our August Men of Tomorrow (pg. 78 onwards) featured this month. We are revealing the first ten of thirty men, in a set that includes the likes of gentleman poet Adam Tie, Grimm & Company founder Benjamin Aryanto, CEO and Co-Founder of Prefer Bean-Free coffee Jake Berber and the deeply talented thespian Shrey Bhargava.  

Even travelling can be elevated to an art form, as Skyscanner’s Cyndi Hui tells us (pg. 124). We embody this ourselves in experiences that border on the beatific such as Amanjiwo (pg. 120) and the Belmond Train (pg. 114). The spirit of adventure is also encapsulated in the Breitling Orbiter (pg. 68) and a pair of new Panerai Submersibles (pg. 60). The latter is part of an exciting slew of new timepieces revealed in this month’s Watches & Wonders (pg. 48 onwards). 

A gentleman who immerses himself in art develops a heightened sensitivity to beauty, proportion and harmony, which extends beyond the confines of galleries and concert halls into all aspects of his life, right down to the accoutrements and garments with which he chooses to adorn himself and this, our first fashion issue for the year, has those in spades.

Louis Vuitton heralds a “new formal” for its Prêt-à-Porter Homme FW24 (p. 26), and our indomitable Kelly Lewi has digested and parsed everything this season in her insightful Trend Report (p. 34). Heritage Italian brand Loro Piana has embraced the culture of the Rising Sun to great aplomb (p. 40) and our SS24 Fashion Spread (p. 46) ties all these elements together in a grand tapestry of aesthetic masculinity. Topping off fashion, we interview Singapore’s very own fashion icon, Desmond Tan (p. 70) — he’s equal parts actor and fashionista, but it appears he might have missed his calling as a connector of the people.

Accessories abound, serving as a conduit for cultural exchange and dialogue, transcending boundaries of language and geography: This season, timepieces and jewellery express facets of their collaborative partners like in the case of Hublot with Depeche Mode (p. 82) or Tissot with Damian Lillard (p. 86), or even as a reflection of its time as with the Piaget Polo 79 (p. 84).

We spoke to Art SG’s Magnus Renfrew (p. 102) and UBS’s Art Advisor Carola Wiese (p. 104) during its second edition, witnessing Singapore’s primacy on the SEA art scene as we begin to supplant Hong Kong. 

The Lunar New Year and with it, the arrival of Spring is considered a season of renewal and rejuvenation inspiring poets and philosophers with its beauty and vitality across East Asian cultures. In terms of fashion, the future is pretty darned bright: cute creatures of legend abound in Dior (p. 18) and Onitsuka Tiger (p. 24) collabs. Stone Island is also encouraging you to find your compass (p. 26) — you can’t get to your personal objectives without a direction, can you? 

Speaking of creatures, in East Asian cultures, dragons are generally considered benevolent symbols of power, wisdom and longevity. Whereas in Western cultures, they are frequently linked to chaos, greed and often the antagonists that need to be vanquished by heroic figures as part of their hero’s journey.

This February, Augustman is kicking off our hunt for “August Men of Tomorrow” (p. 15) — we are looking for men who are looking to assume their responsibilities as stewards to a wholesome society. We have a slew of draconic-inspired timepieces (p. 62 to 73). We also covered the new (and old) novelties at LVMH Watch Week from Hublot, Zenith and Bulgari (p. 74 onwards). For this issue, “main character energy” comes by way of the Parmigiani Tonda PF, as we address the trend that in watchmaking, the quieter and more subtle the timepieces are, the more voluminous they speak (p. 54). 

We covered escapes, local and abroad (p. 98 onwards) as well, in case you want to take your 2024 long weekends to the next level.

Psychologically speaking, humans absolutely need to be occupied with something deep, profound and difficult for lives to have meaning. Life is both gift and terrible burden; it means taking it upon your shoulders to transform the chaos of potential into the reality of positive and productive outcomes for you and your fellowmen. So, my recommendation is to get a solid pair of Onitsuka boots for those unavoidable storms (p. 24 or p. 40 — whichever colour floats your boat).

A solid timepiece is also worth its weight in gold. The Santos de Cartier has been an icon since 1904 and for 120 years been taking evolutive steps as a dressy yet versatile all-occasion companion (p. 42). Speaking of dressy, you need to pay more attention to Rolex’s serious aesthetic chops because collectively, we failed to notice that the Geneva Manufacture is more than just sports watches (p. 48). When dressing up, consider that couturier extraordinaire Dior has released a capsule collection so undeniably iconic yet so irrefutably quiet (p. 16).
 
Louis Vuitton, too, joins them in a Spring/Summer collection (p. 32) now heading to boutiques that speak with the elegance of Pharrell Williams’ trendsetting taste while still acknowledging the civil discourse of “stealth wealth”. This issue, we are also launching our inaugural feature: The Starter Kit — which looks at essential tools and services for you to start the year well equipped, well rested and looking your best.

During a TED talk, Kaustav Dey, Vice President of fashion behemoth Tommy Hilfiger said “Fashion helps us express who we are and what we stand for.” 

As we head towards 2024, we are looking to help you define what you stand for in this issue. Indeed, I never thought I would see the day men would carry what was once considered a “handbag”, yet here we are with C de Cartier (p. 20) and Givenchy (p. 22). As always, we get a little introspective towards the tail end of the year

As per our end-of-year tradition, the Editorial Team’s curated the top 100 products (from thousands) for you in our third edition of the Awesome List (p. 74).Everything in our December book is a desire to help you establish aesthetic literacy: redefining how you perceive yourself and how the world reacts to you.

There are subtle undertones of rebellion this season. Whether it’s Givenchy (p. 41) or Fendi’s collab with Stefano Pilati (p. 28), the concepts of subversion are alive and well. In a sense, they even connect with the contrasting philosophies of “quiet luxury” – what was once quietly (thus courteously) enjoyed in historical times and gave way to psychological prestige needs as luxuries became “status indicators”, has now come full circle as both mindset and aesthetic (p. 48).

Even timepieces are not spared with the stylistic push towards elegance and sophistication (p. 82) rather than overt displays of grandeur. It is against this backdrop that now, the global traveller, with his retinue of accessories and myriad of options, discovers that travel isn’t just the act of getting to one’s destination but also the trappings of that nomadic lifestyle – think Tumi (p. 106) and Rimowa (p. 108). We have begun to consider how our possessions affect us more than it influences those who perceive us.

Finally, consider Shawn Thia, our cover star. A young chap who took a bold direction in creating memes with SGAG eventually launched a career in acting (p. 52); what an allegory for Bulgari, a brand which in the last 12 years has become a recognised and beloved name in watchmaking – an industry that plies its trade on the back of a legacy of centuries.


Trappings can showcase our values because it takes a significant amount of coin and we spend undue amounts of time trying to figure out how to get our money’s worth.It is also in this process that identity often finds its most eloquent expression –  To what values and aesthetics do we aspire? To what lifestyle do we ascribe? It’s an age where those so blessed have choices in abundance.. The choice of a finely crafted timepiece or the allure of a precision-engineered automobile reflects our appreciation for excellence and the pursuit of
the extraordinary. Consider Chanel’s remarkable foray into high-tech ceramics in watchmaking (p. 46). It’s a testament to the unceasing pursuit of innovation and the harmonious marriage of tradition and technology. 
Conversely. purveyors like Patek Philippe (p. 110) and Vacheron Constantin (p. 114) continue to ply levels of craft that retain the best traditions of human artisanship. Speaking of automobiles, costs in Singapore means that a car transcends its functional utility as “a mode of transport”. Therefore investing in the best-made cars (p. 118) isn’t just a financial decision; it’s an investment in the joy of living life to the fullest.
 But ultimately, it’s not about materialism but using these objects as catalysts for inspiration and as tools to elevate our daily experiences. By surrounding ourselves with well-crafted, inspiring artifacts, we can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, turning the drudgery of daily life into a canvas for our dreams to take flight.


In this issue, we embark on a sartorial journey weaving together the iconic threads of fashion’s greatest marques while being accessorised with watchmaking’s most storied brands, creating a tapestry of style that speaks to the connoisseur in us all. Dior’s haute couture history extends its sophistication onto its accessories and bags (p. 26), Braun Büffel’s more utilitarian roots are finding new growth in aesthetically crafted leather goods as the brand enters a new era (p. 38). It’s a simpatico perspective best described as accessorial grace.
Meanwhile, Hermès adroitly banked on classicism with contemporary appeal peppered with a soupçon of punk (p. 112) alongside the textured logo-mania of Fendi’s Chiodo backpack (p. 36). This subtle interplay of patterns and textures bridging the worlds of high fashion and artistry is a theme echoed in Bottega Veneta’s meticulous weaving of the past, present and future of Italian culture, heritage and art (p. 32). These brands, though distinct, remind us that fashion is a canvas for creativity, offering a playground for self-expression and individuality.
Furthermore, iconic fashion meets iconic timekeeping via Longines (p. 52), Bell & Ross (p. 54) and Cartier (p. 56) – suggesting that style is not just about appearance, but also an intricate dance between form and function.
Finally, what better representation for indulgence and elevated living than a week in the Maldives? A destination (p. 138) that reflects the seamless blend of colours and textures found in the world of high fashion. Its azure waters and pristine beaches offer a serene escape, and a euphoric sensation akin to slipping into a beautifully tailored ensemble like the Giorgo Armani (p. 98) fits that cover star Eddie Peng wears.

In this tome, we’ve packed what we believe to be the most worthy down payments for what we call “signifiers of taste and reputability” - the Rolex Datejust (p. 40) has been the choice of Presidents since its debut and so its inclusion should not be surprising. Also, what better symbol of accomplishment than Patek Calatrava Travel Time (p.44), one of the summits of horological achievement. The TAG Heuer Skippera (p. 50) is also one of those few beloved vintage revivals that managed to take a modern interpretation while being authentic to its spirit. The best bang for buck? One simply can’t go wrong with a watch that can handle formal or casual elegance like the Tudor Black Bay (p.54). 

Finally, we saved the best for major features: Our cover star, the new Louis Vuitton Tambour (p. 96) is an unexpected yet thoroughly welcomed addition to the luxury sports genre - the industry is finally waking up to the idea that integrated sports timepieces don’t always have to scream, they can be classy like the Parmigiani PF Tonda Sport (p. 106) or even sculptural, like an art piece you wear similar to what Hublot (p. 110) has with its Orlinski and Maxime collabs.

At the end of the day, great art needs a great canvas and this Fall/Winter 2023 menswear collections (p. 114) are an immaculate dreamscape for the sartorially discerning, serving as a reminder that oftentimes sumptuous fabric accompanied with exquisite tailoring make look simple but its minimalist sophistication makes your chosen accompaniments (like watches and jewellery) pop, for a lasting impression.

Humanity has gone from travelling for survival to doing so for prestige. But have we really? We discovered that flying 3,404 km to the Maldives (p. 108) isn’t about a flex of privilege instead it’s about human connections and that shared experience of new frontiers. Even a cruise (p. 54) is an anathema to many because you are mostly confined to a vessel, but at least it is no more a mystery than those who choose to indulge in staycations and those have become growingly popular even as international travel returns to full swing.

The quote, "Because it is there," is attributed to George Mallory, an English climber who perished during his third attempt to climb Mt. Everest. Beyond leisure, going into the great unknowns is what disrupters do. Suppressing all natural inclinations to risk aversion and going out there allowed Nelson Yap to turn Benjamin Barker regional (p. 86). Did you ever think there would be a Singaporean consumer electronics brand in Asia-Pacific? Jonathan Tan of Prism+ has done it (p. 66). What about new world wines (p. 50), and who would have thought fruits from the vine in places other than France can give the French a run for their money? Don Melchor did.

The human spirit is all about the willingness to risk in the attempt of furthering the gifts of humanity. Read about Franck Muller pioneering fun ways to tell time (p. 96) and Moët Hennessy Diageo Managing Director Patrick Madendjian on the new pleasures of rediscovering old spirits (p. 104). 

This issue is all about discovery and disruption.

Mads Mikkelsen looks intimidating but isn’t, he’s emblem of silver-haired refinement and maturity, with a face weathered and lined but rather than coming across haggard, he’s oozing bizarre sex appeal. He is a man of contrasts.

Flip this month’s tome and you too will discover an issue of contrasts - Chanel and Hermes (p. 16) as men’s accessorial staples? How can this be? A sporty Patek Calatrava (p.30)? Get out of here! Hublot x Nespresso (p. 40)? Have you all gone mad? Pastel coloured Panerai watches (p. 42)? Has hell frozen over? What we are witnessing is a renaissance in the art of combining two disparate concepts into one cohesive design.

Even planet stewardship is in the middle of a paradigm shift - Partners of Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative have discovered we need to shift from mere conservation of species to conservation of functions (p. 82) as our Editor discovered during an epic diving trip to the Caribbeans. Even fashion’s latest buzzwords like “Quiet Luxury” have been turned on their head with unexpected styling twists on foundational key investment pieces (the spread on p. 100) - no longer quiet but quite the splash.

Life’s full of surprises. Enjoy the issue.

Watches can be totemic. For Joel in the game and HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, his watch is a reminder of the life he had (and lost) and now found again in Ellie, his young charge.

This year, Watches & Wonders took it back to the basics - gone were the overtly technical novelties of yesteryear and in their place, timepieces grounded in the evergreen classics of watchmaking’s first golden age. Check out our coverage of the fair from p. 36 to 55, paying special attention to Rolex, Cartier, Tudor, TAG Heuer and Zenith. Special mention has to be made for Parmigiani Fleurier as the brand continues its rapid ascent, building upon its momentum from the last edition of the watch fair after a significant stall.

Furthermore, nothing goes better with emotional introspection than whisky, we cast our eye on Glenrothes - no longer than overwhelming peaty tipple but something more nuanced (p. 70) and then there’s Royal Salut (p. 72). We got realistic about staycations as well, so many of us spend them in Orchard Road which fails to live up to the vacation part of the term, so we recommended The Outpost Hotel (p. 80) 

As Joel continues to seek his “Tao” in his stewardship of Ellie, our cover star Xu Bin (p. 108) has already found his. Having left Fuzhou at a young age for Singapore, his “hero’s journey” is one shaped by Jin Yong’s wuxia, and he knows that even if he enjoys a modicum of success now, his journey of learning is only just beginning. 

Religious orders in antiquity paid great emphasis on jewels and jewel accessories to reflect caritas (or light) a sign of divine beauty. Over time, it was treated as something not masculine enough and a result, men's jewellery-wearing traditions became minimalistic. It therefore stands to reason, that part of our fascination and rising popularity of head turning models from Cartier (p. 42), Jaeger-LeCoultre (p. 46), Vacheron Constantin (p. 40) and Gucci (p. 48), to name a few, have entered into the luxury milieu with more sophisticated finishing, decorative techniques and even gem setting - we still love bling!

From our wrists into our stomachs: we had the fantastic tasting experience with an exclusive $12,000 bottle of Glenrothes 42 years (p. 76) and witnessed the launch of Fuji whiskey (p. 78); it’s not just watchmaking and whiskies, wearables are also enjoying a renaissance! We explored wearables like the Apple Ultra (p. 84) and the Garmin Marq 2 (p. 86) that show these devices are no longer just sports bio-metric accessories but true lifelong companions. 

This issue, we also spoke to several captains of industry: August Mentor and Microsoft CTO Richard Koh (p. 128), Aesop Perfumer Barnabé Fillion (p. 124), Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe (p. 114), Zenith CEO Julien Tornare (p. 110) and last but not least, our ass-kicking cover star Ludi Lin (p. 104) explains exactly why men shouldn’t fear failure - we learn more from the attempt than we do the success!



This month, we celebrate our mothers, our crushes, our wives, it is these women who push us to want to be the best men we could be. It is this quest that, since time immemorial, has drawn us to beautiful garments and flashy baubles, like peacocks astride a sociocultural stage.
