Welcome to the first edition of Asian Diver Scuba101! magazine. In this unique edition
of the magazine, we pay tribute to some of the most amazing dive destinations around
Southeast Asia. With hundreds of different dive sites, catering to all skill levels, around
the region, it is often extremely difficult to decide which are the sites that we want to
visit on our dives.

This issue will focus on the blue economy, explore complex connections and interdependencies, and call for a united front to seek solutions for both economic and environmental sustainability. We will also celebrate 30 years of ADEX, a veritable platform for gathering all ocean lovers who will stand together to seek best practices, and promote awareness and education for the protection of our most valuable resource.

I’ve hardly dived in this part of the world, so putting this edition together was very exciting. The Bay of Bengal, the Arabian and Andaman Seas, and the seas off the eastern coast of Africa hold their own underwater treasures and secrets waiting to be discovered. The (underwater) world truly is a diver’s oyster, and I hope to be logging more dives till I’m old and grey. Let this edition be your portal and appetiser

This issue dives to new depths as it looks at how people have taken diving to various extremes. One end delves into the freediving world - how it started as a livelihood and what it has evolved into - to the other end of the spectrum where technical diving exceeds recreational limits, requires diligence and discipline, and the gumption to go where others can only imagine.

This issue honours the fairer sex, who have broken through the glass ceiling, and made giant waves and splashes in the scuba industry. On top of that, we cannot forget the colour, flair and dimension they have added with their grace, beauty and perspectives.

Embarking on a new decade, 2020 has presented many uncertainties and a multitude of challenges. For the 26th edition of Asia Dive Expo (ADEX), we were excited to return to the theme of a “Plastic-Free Ocean” for a second time to consider a range of new issues that have come to the fore since the marine plastic problem was first addressed at last year’s showr .
